NATURAL SCIENCE  4

Unit 2 «LIFE PROCESSES”

STRUCTURES

* Nutririon is a constant process that takes place inside your body.

* Nutrition takes place in different systems. (La nutrición tiene lugar en diferentes aparatos).

* Our digestive system breaks food down into small particles called nutrients. Our muscles and organs need these nutrients to give us energy and help us grow. Once the digestive system has extracted the nutrients, it gets rid of the waste.

* The excretory system removes excess water and other waste products from our body. The main organs are the kidneys.

* The circulatory system takes blood to all parts of the body. It’s made up of the heart and blood vessels.

* The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and collects waste products to be expelled.

* The circulatory system functions all the time, day and night.

* The heart pumps blood in a one-way direction around our body.

* Our respiratory system takes in oxygen and expels carbon dioxide. It’s made up of the nostrils in the nose, the trachea, the two bronchi and the two lungs.

* The diaphragm is a muscle below our lungs. This muscle helps us breathe in and out.

* The five senses, the nervous system and the locomotor system work together to enable us to interact with our environment.

* The reproductive system allows humans to make more living things of the same type. A tiny egg becomes fertilised and over nine months grows into a new human being.

* Pregnancy is the period during which the baby develops and becomes larger inside the mother’s uterus.
