Unit 5 “INVERTEBRATES”

STRUCTURES

* Invertebrate animals haven’t got an internal skeleton or a spinal column. (Los animales invertebrados no tienen un esqueleto interno o una columna vertebral).

* The most important groups of invertebrate are: sponges, cnidarians, worms, echinoderms, mollucs and arthropods. (Los grupos más importantes de invertebrados son: esponjas, medusas, gusanos, equinodermos, moluscos y artrópodos).

* SPONGES: (ESPONJAS)

– They are very simple. (Se ven a simple vista). – They are aquatic and live attached to rocks. – They cannot move about. (No se mueven). – There are many different shapes and colours. (Las hay de diferentes formas y colores).

* CNIDARIANS: (MEDUSAS)

– Jellyfish are cnidarians. Most of them live in the sea and move about in sea currents.

– They have got jelly-like bodies that look like umbrellas. (Tienen cuerpos gelatinoso con forma de paraguas).

– They have got poisonous tentacles that can sting you. (Tienen tentáculos venenosos que pueden picarte).

* WORMS: (GUSANOS)

– They have got long, soft bodies. They haven’t got legs. (Tienen cuerpos largos y suaves. No tienen patas).

– They include very different animals: earthworms, roundworms and tapeworms. (Incluyen diferentes animales: lombrices de tierra, lombrices intestinales y tenia ).

* MOLLUCS: (MOLUSCOS)

– All mollucs have got soft bodies. Most of them have got one or two shells to protect their bodies.

– They can be aquatic or terrestrial. (Pueden ser acuáticos o terrestres).

– They are oviparous. Larvae hatch from eggs.   (Son ovíparos. De los huevos salen las larvas).

BIVALVES

SNAILS

OCTOPUSES, SQUIDS AND CUTTLEFISH

They have got two shells .

They are aquatic and most of them are marine animals.

For example: mussels, oyster and clams.

They have got a single spiral shell.

Slugs haven’t got a shell.

They can be terrestrial and aquatic.

They have got limbs with suctions caps for hunting prey.

Octopuses haven’t got a shell, but squids and cuttlefish have got an internal shell.

* ECHINODERMS: (EQUINODERMOS)

– They have got a skeleton made of hard plates, often with spines.

– They are marine animals. (Son animales marinos).

STARFISH (ESTRELLAS DE MAR)

SEA URCHINS (ERIZOS DE MAR)

Most of them have got five limbs, called rays. They move along the seabed using hundreds of tiny feet at the bottom of the ray.

They are round in shape. They live on the seabed. They have got spines to move with and to protect their bodies.

* ARTHROPODS: (ARTRÓPODOS)

– They are the most numerous group. (Son el grupo más numeroso)

– They have got a segmented body and an articulated exoskeleton. (Tienen un cuerpo segmentado y esqueleto externo aticulado).

INSECTS (INSECTOS)

ARACHNIDS (ARÁCNIDOS)

CRUSTACEANS (CRUSTÁCEOS)

MYRIAPODS (MIRIÁPODOS)

They are the most abundant. They have got six legs and most have got two antennae. All insects have two or four wings. Their bodies are divided intro three parts: the head, the thorax and the abdomen.

They have got eight legs and haven’t got antennae.

Spiders and scorpions are arachnids.

They have got a hard exoskeleton, antennae and many have got ten legs.

For example: crabs, shrimps, prawns and woodlice.

They have got long bodies made up of many identical segments and antennae.

For example: centipedes and millipedes.
