STRUCTURES

* An ecosystem is made up of two parts, the biotope and the biocoenosis. (Un ecosistema consta de dos partes: el biotope y la biocenosis).

* The biotope, or physical environment, includes all of the non-living things in an ecosystem, such as geographical relief, soil, light and temperature. (El biotopo, o medio físico, incluye todos los elementos del ecosistema que no son seres vivos, como el relieve geográfico, el suelo, la luz y la temperatura).

* The biocoenosis includes all the living things in an ecosystem, such as plants, animals and other organisms. (La biocenosis incluye a todos los seres vivos del ecosistema, como las plantas, los animales y otros organismos).

* A population is a group of organisms that live together and belong to the same species. (Una población es un grupo de organismos que viven juntos y pertenecen a la misma especie).

* A community is a collection of different populations that live together in one place. (Una comunidad es un conjunto de diferentes poblaciones que habitan juntas en el mismo lugar).

* Intraspecific relationships exist between individual members of the same species. (Las relaciones intraespecíficas existen entre individuos de la misma especie).

* Interspecific relationships exist between individual members of different species. (Las relaciones interespecíficas existen entre individuos de diferentes especies).

* A food chain shows the trophic relationships between organisms that belong to different trophic groups. (Una cadena trófica muestra las relaciones tróficas entre organismos que pertenecen a diferentes grupos tróficos).

* A food web shows all the different food chains in an ecosystem. (Una red trófica muestra todas las cadenas tróficas de un ecosistema).

* Natural ecosystems: Ecosystems where no human activity has altered the biotope. They include: terrestrial ecosystems (woodlands, coasts, tundra, grasslands or prairies, tropical rainforests, forests and deserts)  and aquatic ecosystems (rivers, oceans, wetlands and lakes). (Ecosistemas naturales: son ecosistemas donde la actividad humana no ha alterado el biotopo. Incluyen: ecosistemas terrestres como bosques, costas, tundra, praderas, selvas tropicales y desiertos) y ecosistemas acuáticos como ríos, océanos, humedades y lagos.).

* Artificial ecosystems: Ecosystems where human activity has altered the biotope. They include cities, towns, villages and farms. Artificial aquatic ecosystems include reservoirs, garden ponds and canals. (Ecosistemas artificiales: son ecosistemas donde la actividad humana ha alterado el biotopo. Incluyen ciudades, pueblos, aldeas y granjas).

* The biosphere is all of the ecosystems of the Earth. It includes the oceans, the land, the atmosphere and all the living things on the planet. (La biosfera es el conjunto de todos los ecosistemas de la Tierra. Incluye los océanos, las tierras, la atmósfera y a todos los seres vivos del planeta).

* The place where a population lives is called its habitat. (El lugar donde vive una población se llama hábitat).

* A biome is a group of ecosystems that share similar geographic and climatic conditions. (Un bioma es un grupo de ecosistemas que comparten condiciones climáticas y geográficas similares).

* Ecosystems change over time. Sometimes changes are natural, others are caused by human activity. (Los ecosistemas cambian con el tiempo. Algunos cambios son naturales y otros son producidos por la actividad humana).
