• Everything around us that takes up space is made up of matter.
• There are different types of matter. Each type of matte is a substance. All objects have two properties: * MASS is the amount of matter in an object. It is measured in kilograms.
• * VOLUME is the amount of space an object occupies. It is measured in litres.
• Matter exists in three states: solid, liquid and gas. Solids have fixed shape and fixed volume. Liquids have fixed volume but their shape can change. Gases do not have a fixed shape nor a fixed volume.
• Physical changes: matter changes size and shape but the substance stays the same.
• Chemical changes: the substance is transformed into another different substance.
• MELTING: a solid is heated and changes into a liquid.
• EVAPORATION: a liquid is heated and changes into a gas.
• CONDESATION: a gas cools and changes into a liquid.
• SOLIDIFICATION: a liquid is cooled and changes into a solid.
