UNIT 1 «PLANET EARTH AND ITS REPRESENTATION (“PLANETA TIERRA Y SU REPRESENTACIÓN”)

En esta unidad estudiaremos: · los diferentes elementos que conforman el Universo de acuerdo a la teoría del Big Bang, · en qué consiste el Universo, las galaxias y el Sistema Solar; · los planetas del Sistema Solar, las asteroides, las cometas y los meteoros;  · las diferentes capas de la atmósfera y las capas internas de la Tierra; · los movimientos de la Tierra (rotación y la traslación); · las fases lunares y las características de los eclipses (solares y lunares); · los tipos de representación de la Tierra (mapas, globos terráqueos y planos); · qué son las coordenadas geográficas y para qué se utilizan.  En esta ficha se recoge el vocabulario más importante y las estructuras que el alumnado aprenderá, junto con unos enlaces de vídeos que serán de utilidad para repasar los contenidos estudiados.

STRUCTURES

 *The Universe is everything that exists. It contains millions of galaxies. These contain stars, planets and other astronomical objects. (El Universo es todo el espacio que existe. Contiene millones de galaxias. Éstas contienen estrellas, planetas y otros objetos astronómicos).

*The Solar System is the part of the Milky Way galaxy where Earth is located. There are eight planets in the Solar System. The planets all orbit the Sun.. (El sistema solar es la parte de la Vía Láctea donde se sitúa a la Tierra. Existen ocho planetas dentro del Sistema Solar que orbitan alrededor del Sol). 

* The inner Solar System has four small planets. In their order from the Sun these are: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They’re made of rock. (El sistema solar interior está formado por los cuatro planetas más pequeños. Su orden desde el más cercano al Sol son: Mercurio, Venus, la Tierra y Marte. Están formados por tierra).

* The outer Solar System has four giant planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Some have rings and satellites. The outer planets are mostly made of gas and are colder than the inner planets. (El sistema solar exterior está compuesto por los cuatro planetas gigantes: Júpiter, Saturno, Urano y Neptuno. Algunos tienen anillos y satélites. Están formados principalmente por gases y son más fríos que los planetas interiores).

* The Earth moves in two different ways. Rotation is the movement of the Earth on its imaginary axis. Revolution is the movement of the Earth around the Sun.  (La Tierra se desplaza de dos formas diferentes La rotación es el movimiento de la Tierra sobre su eje imaginario. La traslación es el movimiento de la Tierra alrededor del Sol). 

*The revolution of the Moon causes its appearance to change during the month. These changes are called the phases of the Moon.(El movimiento de traslación de la Luna provoca cambios en la forma en que la vemos durante el mes. Estos cambios se llaman fases de la Luna).

* The Earth is made up of different layers. The solid part of the Earth, the geosphere, is divided into three main layers. The outer part of the Earth is gaseous and is called the atmosphere. Itʼs made up of layers. (La Tierra está formada por diferentes capas. La parte sólida, la geosfera, se divide en tres capas principales. La parte exterior es gaseosa y se llama atmósfera. Está formada por capas).

* The crust is the outer layer of the Earth. It’s made of rock. It contains the continents, islands and the ocean floor.    (La corteza es la parte exterior de la Tierra. Está hecha de rocas. Contiene los continentes, las islas y la corteza oceánica). The mantle is a hot layer of magma and other semi-liquid rocks and minerals. (El manto es una capa caliente de magma y otras rocas y minerales en estado semilíquido). The core forms the centre of the Earth. The outer core is made of melted iron and other metals. The inner core is solid and contains different metals.(El núcleo forma el centro de la Tierra. El núcleo exterior está formado por hierro y otros metales derretidos. El núcleo interior es sólido y contiene diferentes metales).

* The troposphere is the layer of the atmosphere in which we live. It contains the air that living things need. It’s the thinnest layer. (La troposfera es la capa de la atmósfera en la que vivimos. Contiene el aire que los seres vivos necesitan. Es la capa más fina). The stratosphere is the next layer up. It contains the ozone layer and little air. (La estratosfera es la siguiente capa. Contiene la capa de ozono y poco aire).  The ionosphere has almost no air and is where we have artificial satellites. (La ionosfera casi no tiene aire y es donde se localizan los satélites artificiales).

* The atmosphere is essential for life on Earth. It contains natural greenhouse gases which trap heat and maintain a temperature which makes life possible on Earth. (La atmósfera es esencial para la vida en la Tierra. Contiene gases de efecto invernadero que atrapan el calor y mantienen una temperatura que hace posible la vida en la Tierra).

*The ozone layer helps protect us from harmful ultraviolet rays. (La capa de ozono nos protege de los dañinos rayos ultravioletas).

*There are different ways of representing the Earth. Globes imitate the real shape of the Earth in three dimensions. Maps and plans represent the Earth in two dimensions. (Existen diferentes formas de representar la Tierra. Los globos terráqueos imitan la forma real de la Tierra en tres dimensiones. Los mapas y los planos representan la Tierra en dos dimensiones).

* Globes and maps have imaginary lines called meridians and parallels. We use the point where these lines cross to accurately describe a location on the Earth’s surface. (Los globos y los mapas tienen líneas imaginarias llamadas meridianos y paralelos. Utilizamos el punto donde estas líneas se cruzan para localizar puntos en la superficie terrestre).

* Meridians are the semi-circular lines which go from the North Pole to the South Pole. Parallels are the circular horizontal lines around the Earth. (Los meridianos son líneas semicirculares que van del polo Norte al polo Sur. Los paralelos son líneas circulares horizontales alrededor de la Tierra).
